KARI-OCA WORLD CONFERENCE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ON TERRITORY, ENVIRONMENT
AND DEVELOPMENT
PRESS CONFERENCE
The Coordinating Committee of the World
Conference of Indigenous Peoples on Territory, Environment and
Development, (Kari-Oca Village, May 25-30, 1992) held a Kari-Oca Press
Conference at Rio Centro, the official UNCED venue on June 9, 1992. The
official Kari-Oca Declaration, the Indigenous Peoples' Earth Charter and
all the Resolutions were presented to the international community by the
Coordinating Committee, which consisted of the Comite InterTribal, the
Coordinating body of the Indigenous Organisations of the Amazon Basin (COICA)
and Centro Mocovi.
INDIO '92
The International Indigenous Commission hosted INDIO '92, a public forum,
private discussions and workshops, concert and press conferences involving
Indigenous delegations from all regions of Central and South America (Xavante,
Kayapo, Kuna, Mapuche, Garifuna, etc.) at Flamingo Park, site of the
non-governmental organisations' Global Forum.
RESOURCE AND MANAGEMENT PANEL
The World Council of Indigenous Peoples (WCIP), the Comite InterTribal of
Brazil and the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC), were among those who
participated in a panel on Indigenous Peoples' Resource Use and Management
at the Museu Historico Nacional in Rio.
ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS PRESS CONFERENCE
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN), the national representative
organization of the First Nations in Canada, held an informative Press
Conference at Rio Centro, the official UNCED venue, with special guest,
Jacques Cousteau. Following this meeting, delegates, accompanied by Mr.
Cousteau, raised a rainbow coloured flag representing the Indigenous
Nations of the Southern hemisphere in the Rio Centro concourse.
